Family Day at the New York Aquarium with Professor Maurizio Porfiri
Alumni are invited to bring their children and grandchildren, ages 7 to 13, for a day of undersea adventure at the New York Aquarium. NYU-Poly Professor, Maurizio Porfiri, will lead an interactive session on how robotic fish are changing the study of marine life. This will be an unforgettable experience of bringing robots to life. Children participating in the workshop will build and race a robotic fish.
Maurizio Porfiri, an assistant professor in NYU-Poly’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is recognized for his work on biologically inspired robots that mimic the movement of schooling fish so convincingly that real fish are enticed to follow them. His goal is to create self-powered underwater robots capable of steering fish populations away from hazards such as oil and chemical spills or power turbines. You can read more about Maurizio’s work at: Popular Science.
Following the workshop, lunch will be served in the New York Aquarium’s Education Hall. Space is limited for this unique event that brings together multiple generations of Poly thinkers.
