Perceptual Quality Assessment for Wireless Video Applications

The rapid evolution of wireless networks is driven by the growth of wireless packet data applications such as interactive mobile multimedia applications, wireless streaming services, and video-on-demand.

The largely heterogeneous network structures, severe channel impairments, and complex traffic patterns make the wireless networks much more unpredictable compared to their wired counterparts. One of the major challenges with the roll-out of these services is therefore the design of wireless networks that fulfill the stringent quality of service requirements of wireless video applications. In this presentation, the applicability of perceptual image quality metrics for real-time quality assessment of Motion JPEG2000 (MJ2) video streams over wireless channels is investigated. In particular, a reduced reference hybrid image quality metric (HIQM) is identified as suitable for an extension to video applications. It outperforms other known metrics in terms of required overhead and prediction performance.

About the Speaker

Hans-Jurgen Zepernick received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree in electrical engineering (with distinction) from the University of Siegen, Germany, in 1987 and the Dr.-Ing. Degree (with distinction) from the University of Hagen, Germany, in 1994. From 1987 to 1989, he was with the Radio and Radar Department of Siemens AG, Munich, Germany.

He is the Chair Professor and Research Director of radio communications at the School of Engineering of the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BIT), Ronneby, Sweden. Prior to this appointment at BIT in October 2004, he held the positions of Professor of wireless communications at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia; Deputy Director of the Australian Telecommunications Research Institute (ATRI); and Associate Director of the Australian Telecommunications Cooperative Research Centre (ATcrc). He was the Leader of the ATcrc's wireless program and the Leader of the center's radio transmission technology project. He served on the Board of Management of ATRI and the Executive Research Committee of the ATcrc. He has been an active participant in the European FP7 Network of Excellence EuroFN contributing to work packages on user-perceived quality of service.

Dr. Zepernick is an author or coauthor of some 150 technical papers and five book chapters in the areas of wireless and radio communications.

He is also the lead author of the textbook entitled Pseudo Random Signal Processing: Theory and Application (Wiley, 2005).

His research interests include radio channel measurement and modeling, radio transmission and access techniques, cooperative communications, mobile multimedia communications, and perceptual quality assessment of mobile multimedia services
