FLL Brooklyn Qualifiers - 2010

January 9, 2010

The project team hosted and organized the Brooklyn Borough FLL Robotics Tournament attended by 33 teams. Nine of the twelve FLL teams mentored by Fellows from the AMPS/CBRI projects won various awards, and advanced to the New York City FLL competition. A significant broader impact of this program is reducing the isolation of minority students, since many students from "underrepresented" minority groups have found themselves not only competing against students from unfamiliar communities, but also cooperating with them to exchange information and strategies and to participate in informal learning experiences. This event was attended by approximately 500 students, teachers, and parents.

FLL Robotics Practice Tournament

December 12, 2009

To familiarize students with a real-world robotics competition, a practice tournament was conducted. This was an important learning exercise for all participants, since few of them had prior experience in such an event. It readily became apparent that what students learned surpassed mere mastery of building and programming robots to perform given tasks. They also learned applied math and science; improved their computer skills; engaged in research experiences; worked effectively in groups; acted as problem-solvers; and became effective presenters. This event was attended by approximately 175-200 students, teachers, and parents.

Brooklyn Borough FLL Robotics Tournament

January 10, 2009

The project team hosted and organized the Brooklyn Borough FLL Robotics Tournament attended by 37 teams. Seven of the thirteen FLL teams mentored by Fellows from the AMPS and AMPS-affiliated project won various awards, including the top award, "Champion" and qualified for one of 14 Brooklyn slots at the New York City FLL competition. A significant broader impact of this program is reducing the isolation of minority students, since many students from "underrepresented" minority groups have found themselves not only competing against students from unfamiliar communities, but also cooperating with them to exchange information and strategies and to participate in informal learning experiences. This event was attended by approximately 450-500 students, teachers, and parents.

To familiarize students with a real-world robotics competition, a practice tournament was conducted. This was an important learning exercise for all participants, since few of them had prior experience in such an event. It readily became apparent that what students learned surpassed mere mastery of building and programming robots to perform given tasks. FLL Robotics Workshop

August 25 - August 27, 2008

Dr. Sang-Hoon Lee, a former doctoral student of Prof. Kapila, and Mr. Corbett Beder, a robotics master teacher with years of FLL robotics experience, conducted the FLL robotics workshop to orient and introduce the AMPS Fellows and teachers to FLL Robotics kit, competition rules, and potential for integrating robotics-based activities in their classrooms. The workshop also provided opportunity for the AMPS Fellows and teachers to conduct numerous hands-on activities, in teams, under the guidance of the workshop instructors. Several research assistants of Prof. Kapila, unaffiliated with the AMPS project, provided additional support for the technical training workshop. The following topics were covered.

  • Overview of the LEGO NXT hardware and software
  • Mechanical construction (components, structures, and mechanisms)
  • Electronic construction (input- and output-ports, Bluetooth technology, motors, speakers, LCD, buttons, touch sensor, light sensor, sound sensor, and ultrasonic sensor)
  • Visual programming environment
  • Building, programming, and testing LEGO robotics vehicle
  • FLL competition (playing field, robot tasks, science research, team-work, communication, etc.)

During the workshop period, the AMPS Fellows and teachers informally interacted and networked with one another during the morning, lunch, and afternoon breaks. The matching of the AMPS Fellows with teachers and school also took place during this period and immediately after it. Administrators and teachers from the participating schools took part in selecting the AMPS Fellows for their schools. The AMPS Fellows were deployed at their schools in fall 2008 and are now performing their duties successfully.

Pedagogy Workshop

August 25 - August 27, 2008

Lynne Greenfield, a former assistant principal of instructional supervision, conducted a pedagogy workshop for the AMPS Fellows. The following topics were covered.

  • Lesson development
  • What, how, activities, and materials for teaching
  • Assessment rubrics
  • Incorporating writing into lab report
  • Learning styles

Summer Training

Summer 2008

The AMPS Fellows were provided training in mechatronics and performed hands-on learning using Parallax Inc.'s "STAMP in Class" educator's program. They used Prof. Kapila's notes from a graduate-level course in Mechatronics to learn about fundamentals of mechatronics. Finally, having acquired significant background in mechatronics and robotics, the AMPS Fellows learned to use FLL Robotics kit to develop, program, and operate mobile robots.
