At the Mechatronics Education Workshop: Designing and Building Effective Programs, hosted by both Professor Kapila and Dr. Tom Lee, Chief Education Officer at Quanser and adjunct professor in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, representatives from a number of universities and colleges from the United States and Canada gathered to start a cohesive dialogue regarding the present and future of the field. Doctoral candidate Jared Frank will be one of only ten American students invited to France for a week this coming July for French-American Doctoral Exchange Seminar (FADEx) , a program organized by the Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States, is aimed at encouraging collaboration among American and French doctoral students with similar research interests and forging what could turn into long-lasting scientific partnerships.

Mechatronics and Robotics Lab graduate students win a $25,000 grant under the Verizon Open Innovation Challenge which funds $250,000 in research and prototyping projects to NYC university teams.
Doctoral student Jared Alan Frank and M.S. student Matthew Moorhead are members of one of 14 teams that won grant funds from the Verizon Challenge. Their project is funded under the virtual reality category and is titled "Connecting People to Robots Using Interactive Augmented Reality Apps." This project is using state of the art hardware and software of mobile devices to provide intuitive metaphors and rich augmented reality feedback for users as they control and interact with robotic technologies.
