National Science Foundation awarded NYU-Poly a Research Experience for Teachers Site Award for a proposal titled: "RET Site: Science and Mechatronics Aided Research for Teachers with an Entrepreneurship expeRience (SMARTER)." The annual award amount is $162,499 and under NSF's continuing grant mechanism, the award is expected to be of three year duration for a total of: $487,497 (May 2012 to April 2015). Prof. Vikram Kapila is the PI of this grant and following NYU-Poly faculty/staff will serve as Senior Personnel: Mr. Ben Esner and Profs. Nikhil Gupta, Magued Iskander, Oded Nov, and Maurizio Porfiri.

Mechatronics Lab graduate student wins 3rd prize in the Simulink Student Video Challenge. Mathworks today announced its winners for the Simulink Student Video Challenge (See Here). The competition received 23 student entries. NYU-Poly graduate student Jared Alan Frank, who conducts his research in the Mechatronics Lab, won the 3rd prize for his submission "iPhone-Controlled Laboratory". Jared conducted his research under NSF's Research Experience for Teachers Site project at NYU-Poly. Since 2009, he has worked on the development of iPhone Apps for robot control in collaboration with NYC middle and high school teachers.

Under the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Site program, Division of Engineering Education and Centers of the National Science Foundation has awarded Polytechnic Institute of NYU a grant titled "RET Site: Science and Mechatronics Aided Research for Teachers (SMARTER)." This award provides funding in the amount $166,667/year. Under NSF's continuing award instrument, the project duration is expected to be three years. Professor Vikram Kapila, will serve as the PI and director of the SMARTER project. The following Polytechnic faculty will serve as senior personnel on the SMARTER project: Professor Nikhil Gupta, Professor Magued G. Iskander, and Professor Maurizio Porfiri.

Central Brooklyn Robotics Initiative (CBRI) has received the following grants for AY 2008: (1) Independence Community Foundation (ICF): $125,000 (7/08—6/09); (2) J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation : $60,000 (7/08—6/09); (3) Motorola Innovation Generation Grant: $50,000 (8/08—7/09); and (4) New York Space Grant Consortium : $20,000 (9/08—8/09). The project is led by Professor Vikram Kapila, Professor Noel N. Kriftcher, and Professor Magued G. Iskander.

Under the GK-12 Fellows program, Division of Graduate Education of the National Science Foundation has awarded Polytechnic University a grant titled "New, GK12: Applying Mechatronics to Promote Science (AMPS)." This award provides funding in the amount $600,000/year. Under NSF's continuing award instrument, the project duration is expected to be five years. Professor Vikram Kapila, will serve as the PI and director of the AMPS project. The Co-PIs of the AMPS project include Professor Magued G. Iskander and Professor Noel N. Kriftcher. In addition, the following Polytechnic faculty will serve as the senior personnel on the AMPS project: Professor Dariusz Czarkowski, Professor Rastislav Levicky, and Professor Maurizio Porfiri.
