Description
Wearable Tech:
Have you ever worn a Fitbit or an Apple Watch? Chances are these electronic objects have taken a common form — a printed circuit board enclosed within a hard plastic shell, but it’s possible to make wearables and controllers that are much more creative. This course invites students to consider domestic and wearable electronics from a design perspective, using physical computing. Physical computing is a process of using inputs, like sensors, and outputs, like motors and LED lights, to design interactive systems that respond to both the physical and digital world. Students will learn how wearable technology can extend well beyond fashion — to include custom game controllers, alternative computer interfaces, health tech, performance, and art.
User Experience Design:
NYU Tandon's Summer Program for User Experience (UX) Design introduces high school students to the fundamentals of using design research to develop innovative and creative design interventions in the form of digital products and services. Designers employ a large variety of creative frameworks, tools, and methods to understand the world we live in.
XR through Virtual Worlds:
NYU Tandon's Summer Program for Extending Reality Through Virtual Worlds introduces high-school students to the fundamentals of designing and developing augmented reality (AR) based video games that focus on telling choice-driven stories. Students will learn to create narrative-based games with engaging and interactive stories that unfold in the real world via AR. Games will emphasize players making choices and drive the narrative by blurring the boundaries between the virtual and real.

Coursework
Programs in Design and Digital Media focus students on creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies. These offerings purposefully explore ‘STEAM‘, combining artistic inquiry with scientific research and technological practice and tools. Students can develop innovative and creative design interventions in the form of digital products and services, or work on their UX technical skills with design software like Adobe CC and Figma to learn to develop prototypes and interfaces that show how their solutions will work. In the AR track, students will learn to create narrative-based games with engaging and interactive stories in which players make choices to drive the narrative, blurring the boundaries between the virtual and real.
