English Language Proficiency Testing Information for Graduate Applicants

All applicants to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering for graduate study must demonstrate excellent English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension. Proficiency will be determined by the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced) or Pearson PTE Academic exams.

The NYU School of Engineering Graduate Admissions Office reserves the right to request proof of English competency from any applicant. At least one of the exams mentioned above is required for:

  • All International applicants (those who have or will request a visa)

  • Applicants (including US Permanent Residents) who have not completed a bachelor’s degree in the United States.

Only applicants who have an undergraduate degree (four years/eight semesters) or a graduate degree (two years/four semesters) of study in the United States or another approved country (to be determined at the discretion of the Office of Graduate Enrollment Management and Admissions) will be approved for a waiver. Applicants who have received transfer credit from a foreign institution may not be approved for a waiver.

Applicants may request a waiver of English language testing by submitting this form to the Office of Graduate Enrollment Management and Admissions by March 1 for Fall applications and November 15 for Spring applications.. Please keep in mind that your waiver request will be reviewed only after an application for admission to the School of Engineering has been submitted AND official transcripts have been received.
