Dual-Degree Student Awarded Civil Engineering Scholarship

Julia Langewis

The Deep Foundations Institute Educational Trust named Julia Langewis (’17) the recipient of the Donald J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship, making her the second Tandon student to receive the award since the scholarship’s inception in 2015.

Langan Engineering and Environmental Services Legacy Scholarship Fund established the $5,000 scholarship in memory of Donald J. Murphy, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the then-Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Murphy's storied career included time as vice president and partner at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services. His interests in geotechnical and environmental engineering are at the heart of the scholarship that honors Tandon students' academic achievements in those fields.

Langewis, who hails from Oakland, CA, is currently a fifth-year undergraduate student studying mathematics and civil engineering through the dual-degree program between the College of Arts and Sciences and the Tandon School of Engineering. In addition to the Murphy Scholarship, Langewis is also the recipient of the 2016 John J. Kassner Scholarship and the Moles Student Award. Langewis’ interest in environmental engineering stems from her parents’ work in the wastewater industry, and last summer Langewis had the opportunity to work for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations.

Professor and Chair of Civil and Urban Engineering Magued Iskander noted Langewis’ “exemplary academic record.” “She has been very active as a student leader, especially in the ASCE Steel Bridge competition, where she was instrumental in this year’s team making it to nationals.”

“Being selected for this scholarship shows that my work can not only be recognized in school but outside of school as well. It is certainly a boost to my confidence and a testament that my hard work has paid off,” Langewis said. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering with concentrations in environmental and water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, and structural engineering.
