Biomedical Engineering Society Honors Professor Flamini

The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) awarded New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering Industry Assistant Professor Vittoria Flamini the 2014 BME  Innovation and Career Development Award for her work in the biomedical engineering field. She received the award for research in cardiovascular biomechanics and fluid mechanics that might lead to the development of non-invasive and patient-specific diagnostic tools.

Flamini, a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, focuses her research upon the creation of patient-specific models of the aorta, the pulmonary artery, and the aortic valve. These models can be used to simulate endovascular treatments and post-operative outcomes or to predict arterial disease progression in response to medications. Her research interests include soft tissue mechanics, medical device development, and multi-physics and multi-scale modeling in cardiovascular physiology. She is collaborating with the NYU Langone School of Medicine to address medical challenges and to integrate engineering into clinical practice and surgery planning.

“During my lessons to mechanical engineering students, I always draw attention to the topics in common between classical mechanic subjects and biomechanics,” Flamini said. “Their discovery of biomedical engineering in the classroom has proved quite successful: So far,  nine Mechanical and Aerospace students have joined my research.”

After receiving her doctorate in biomedical engineering from Dublin City University in 2011, Flamini moved to the United States and joined the faculty of the School of Engineering.

The BMES is the leading professional society for those in the biomedical engineering and bioengineering fields.
