Old Westbury and NYU-Poly Split in Softball

BROOKLYN, NY -   Game one of Saturday's Skyline Conference softball game between NYU-Poly and Old Westbury didn't quite go as planned for the Lady Jays. Old Westbury pounded out 15 hits to win 13-2. But, in game two it was a complete reversal as NYU-Poly jumped out 9-0 after one and never let up, pounding the Panthers 19-2.

In the first contest, NYU-Poly's Miranda Merilli (Altoona, PA) took the loss pitching 4 2/3 and allowing seven runs on 11 hits. She struck out seven. Alyssa Clancy earned the win for Old Westbury, pitching a complete game and allowing just four hits.

Freshmen Christi Bruin (Auburn, WA) had the lone bright spot, an RBI double in the second for NYU-Poly.

But, game two saw runs and lots of them for the Lady Jays. They chased Clancy after just one inning, mainly on patience at the plate. Five base on balls and a key two-RBI double by sophomore Elizabeth Schrandt (Newtown, PA) put NYU-Poly in front 6-0.

But the damage wasn't done, as freshmen Karina Amaro (Goleta, CA) ripped a three-run homer, her first collegiate round-tripper, to put the Lady Jays up 9-0.

Freshmen Briana Feist ( San Diego, CA) earned the complete game victory. She allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out three.

At the plate, Schrandt had a big day, going 3-for-4 while four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA) had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in two.

NYU-Poly is now 15-11 overall and 9-3 on the Skyline Conference.  Old Westbury finishes up Skyline play at 11-3.  NYU-Poly, which is currently in third place, still had to play a double-header against St. Joseph's.
