Associate Professor Erkip Named Finalist in New York Academy of Sciences’ Blavatnik Awards
The New York Academy of Sciences has named Polytechnic Institute of NYU’s Elza Erkip, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering who has made substantial contributions in the area of cooperative wireless communication, a finalist in its 2010 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists.
The awards recognize highly innovative, impactful, and interdisciplinary accomplishments in the life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering.
Dr. Erkip is among 12 scientists (five postdoctoral fellows and seven faculty) from eight New York-area academic and research institutions that a jury of 58 leading scientists selected from among 150 nominations. Dr. Erkip and the other faculty finalists will receive up to $25,000 in unrestricted funds; postdoctoral finalists will receive up to $15,000.
The Academy will announce winners of the Blavatnik awards and honor finalists at the Academy's 7th annual Science & the City Gala, on November 15, 2010.
Dr. Erkip’s general research interests are in wireless communications, information theory, and communication theory. She received the prestigious NSF CAREER award in 2001 and an IBM Faculty Partnership Award in 2000.
Dr. Erkip holds PhD and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, and a BS degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Middle East Technical University, Turkey. She joined NYU-Poly in 2000.
