Merilli 'Perfect' in Win Over Lehman

Freshmen tosses first perfect game in NYU-Poly history


Bronx, NY -   Fifteen Lehman batters faced NYU-Poly freshmen pitcher Miranda Merilli (Altoona, PA) on Thursday. Not a single one of them reached first base, as the Lady Blue Jay hurler tossed the first-ever perfect game in NYU-Poly softball history.  The Lady Jays went on to win 12-0 in five innings over Lehman College in the non-conference game.

Merilli struck out 11 batters, while the other four batters either popped out or grounded out. She is now 10-5 on the season.

Meanwhile, at the plate senior Ryan Graybill (Missouri City, TX), junior Tara Bucci (Montgomery, NJ), and freshmem Corinne Fitzgibbons (Brooklyn, NY) all had two hits. Graybill scored three times, while Fitzgibbons scored three and drove in three. Bucci added a double and three RBI.

In game one, NYU-Poly won 16-2 as senior Laura Buzzard picked up her 8th win, as she scattered five hits and struck out five.  Annamarie Smith (Henderson, NV)  had a big day at the plate going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. She belted a solo homer in the 4th inning.  In the 5th inning, Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA) hit her thirf homer of the year, a 2-run shot. Fitzgibbons smashed her team-leading fifth homer, also a two run shot, in the 3rd inning.

NYU-Poly is now 14-8 overall. They have a pair of Skyline double-headers this weekend against Sage and St. Josephs.
