Softball Splits With Farmingdale, Dominates Old Westbury

Lady Jays earn three big weekend road wins

Long Island, NY -  Talk about a big weekend for Skyline Conference softball. The NYU-Poly softball team battled pre-season favorite Farmingdale on Saturday, then headed back to Long Island Sunday to tassle with other front-runner Old Westbury.  Thanks to the work of freshmen pitcher Miranda Merilli (Altoona, PA), NYU-Poly (12-8, Skyline 3-1) came away with three wins, splitting with Farmingdale and taking both from Old Westbury.

NYU-Poly defeated Farmingdale 2-0 in game one as Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV)  RBI single in the top of the fourth drove in freshmen Natalia Stockinger (Putnam Valley, NY) and gave the Lady Jays a 1-0 lead. Senior Ryan Graybill (Missoui City, TX) followed with another RBI single driving in senior Laura Buzzard (Warrington, PA) to set the final. Merilli picked up her first career shutout, striking out eight while scattering six hits.

Farmingdale won the second game 6-3 as Buzzard suffered the loss allowing six runs on nine hits, while walking one. Freshmen Corinne Fitzgibbons (Brooklyn, NY) went 2-for-3 while sophomore Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA)  had two RBI in the loss.

On Sunday, NYU-Poly defeated Old Westbury 5-0 and 11-1 in six innings. Bruns was 6-for-6 for the day with four runs scored and two RBI. Merilli earned both winnings including her second straight shutout in game one. She allowed four hits in game one, while striking out eight. In game two, she scattered six hits, while walking two and striking out four.

NYU-Poly will host John Jay College on Wednesday at 3:00pm at Floyd Bennett Field.
