Short-Handed Lady Jays Take Two from Philly Bible

Beat Crimson Eagles 3-2 and 11-1

Langhorne, PA -  The NYU-Poly softball team climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season as they defeated Philadelphia Bible College (3-5 overall) in a non-conference twin bill. The Lady Jays (9-7 overall) edged the Lady Crimson Eagles 3-2 in the first game before canning Philly Bible 11-1 in a 6-inning rout. NYU-Poly dressed only nine players for the long, mid-week, road trip.

Sophomore Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA) smacked a two-run single in the top of the third to drive in freshman Natalia Stockinger (Putnam Valley, NY) and senior Laura Buzzard (Warrington, PA) to give NYU-Poly a 3-2 in the first half of the double-header. Sunday, the Philadelphia area native, went 2-for-4 on the day.

Freshmen Miranda Merilli (Altoona, PA) earned her 4th victory of the season as she went the distance while allowing eight hits and two earned runs. She recorded 10 strikeouts and walked just one Crimson Eagle batter. NYU-Poly left 11 runners on base, while Philadelphia Bible stranded seven.

Sunday continued the hit parade in game two as she went 3-for-5 with two doubles, but this time scored two runs instead of driving them in. Stockinger had the big RBI day, as she was 3-for-3 with a walk, double, three RBI and two runs scored. Buzzard, who was the winning pitcher in game two,  finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  The Lady Jays pounded out 12 hits in the 6-inning contest.

On the mound, Buzzard tossed a six-hitter, allowing one run while striking out one. She recorded her 5th win of the season.

NYU-Poly will travel to Farmingdale on Saturday for a huge Skyline Conference showdown. Farmingdale and NYU-Poly were picked one-two in the preseason polls and both have held up to that billing, so far this season. Game one kicks off at 12:00 noon.
