Marywood holds off NYU-Poly

Scranton, PA - It was a tail of two halves and a few no calls that doomed the NYU-Poly men's soccer team as they faced Marywood University Saturday afternoon. The Pacers picked up a goal in each half and their defense turned away a few late Blue Jay threats en route to the 2-0 non-conference victory.

For NYU-Poly, Volkan Turgut (Rochester, NY / Bishop Kearney HS) allowed his first goal of the season in the 16th minute, after going 211 minutes without allowing a score — a new NYU-Poly record. And that first goal was controversial to say the least, as Turgut made a save off a corner and the ball was kicked out of his hands by a Marywood forward. The referee allowed the goal to stand and NYU-Poly trailed 1-0 at half.

The Jays responded, linking together passes and attacking with more determination in the 2nd half, but again, a questionable no call doomed NYU-Poly. Marywood forward Andrew Tarantino appeared to handle the ball before he got it  to his feet, beat two Jay defenders and tucked his shot into the side net in the 50th minute to set the final.

NYU-Poly was outshot for the first time in three games, 22-10 but led from the corner 5-4. Turgut stopped six shots, as did his counterpart for the Pacers. NYU-Poly resumes conference play against Farmingdale, on October 3rd at Aviator Sports Complex at 7:00pm.
