New York's Startup State of Mind

Rather than imitate Silicon Valley, New York City tech companies are playing to Gotham's strengths.


After selling his e-commerce startup Shopping.com to eBay in 2005, Dan Ciporin moved from San Francisco to New York City hoping to become a venture capitalist. But the Big Apple didn’t take technology startups very seriously back then.

“It was tough. There wasn’t the kind of vibrancy and ongoing ecosystem that existed in 2005 in Silicon Valley,” Ciporin says. “It’s hard to describe how cynical and skeptical people were in terms of the opportunity that was presented by startups.”

New York City heading into 2015 is not only a welcoming community for aspiring entrepreneurs, but a hub of the tech industry growing out of the shadow of San Francisco’s Silicon Valley.
