Future City Competition Held at NYU-Polytechnic
METROTECH — “We provide sick people with great treatment,” said Norman Kontarovich, standing behind a tabletop-sized model of a futuristic city where businesses, homes, a vertical farm and a hospital were all connected by hydrogen-powered cars shooting through a system of tubes.
“Everybody has a computer chip installed which sends out nanobots that provide medicine. Our main goal is to destroy cancer.”
Kontarovich, along with his classmates Mark Dijkstra and Wesley Goodrich from Brooklyn’s Mark Twain I.S. 239, were the proud creators of Anima Urbis Illustrata, one of nearly 20 cities of the future on display at Polytechnic Institute of NYU this past Saturday for the regional finals of the annual Future City competition.

In partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers, Metropolitan Section, Polytechnic Institute of New York University has served as host for the New York Regional Finals for 14 years.
First-place winners from Saturday’s competition will go to the national finals in Washington, D.C., set to take place during National Engineers Week, Feb. 18 to 22. They also received a $5,000 annual academic scholarship to NYU-Poly. Second place winners received $2,000 annual scholarships to NYU-Poly.
