The media capital of the world finally will have its own media lab.
NYC Media Lab, a joint project of the New York City Economic Development Corp., Polytechnic Institute of New York University and Columbia University, was launched Monday morning by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Modeled on media labs at MIT and Stanford, it will be housed at NYU-Poly’s downtown Brooklyn campus, and has the distinction of being the nation’s first government-supported media lab, according to the announcement released Monday by the mayor’s office.
The EDC will get the ball rolling with $250,000 in funding.
The lab was among eight initiatives announced last summer that grew out of MediaNYC 2020, a program that convened media and technology experts to look for ways to keep a key New York industry competitive in the face of changes in distribution and technology.
