Environmental Nanotechnology: Impacts and Applications

Dr. Bin Gao
Associate Professor, Agricultural & Biological Engineering
University of Florida

Abstract

Nanotechnology presents a double-edged sward to the environment. On one hand it has immense potential in many green applications and holds the promise of exciting new solutions to environmental problems. On the other hand, there are potential contamination risks associated with various engineered and natural nanoparticles (NPs). This presentation summarizes recent research findings by my group on environmental impacts and applications of nanotechnology. It mainly focuses following topics: stability of NPs, fate and transport of NPs, and nano-based adsorbents for environmental applications. The presentation covers not only experimental and modeling results on fate and transport of various NPs in surface and subsurface runoff, but also synthesis, characterization, and applications of novel engineered nanomaterials.

Bin Gao is an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida (UF). Before he joined the UF faculty, Bin was a research associate at Cornell University and a postdoctoral research associate at Yale University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. His B.S. and M.S. degrees were received from Nanjing University in China. Bin's research mainly lies in studying water quality and environmental sustainability. It spans a broad range of topics including environmental nanotechnology, biochar technology, and contaminant hydrology. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed research papers in top-ranking journals, contributed 1 book and 8 book chapters, and applied 7 patents. Among his journal publications, there are 18 ESI “highly cited” papers and 2 best paper award from Elsevier. He is also a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the UF Research Foundation Professorship, Gamma Sigma Delta Junior Faculty Award of Merit, Giglia Endowment Award, FASABE Outstanding Young Researcher Award, and NSF CAREER Award.
