Associated Press

The Associated Press’s Local News AI is a two-year initiative helping U.S. local newsrooms identify and adopt artificial intelligence-based solutions. In its first year, the program assessed AI readiness in almost 200 newsrooms and published a report of the findings. Local News AI produced a six-unit course (now available on-demand) based on the needs identified in its national research. In its second year, the program developed blueprints for 15 newsroom projects that include automation and AI. The team now manages five project builds that aim to reduce tedious tasks in newsrooms.

Partnership on AI

By bringing local newsrooms into conversation with technologists, researchers, and civil society organizations, the Local News Workstream — part of AI & Media Integrity — seeks to identify major ethical challenges and collect insights on responsible AI practices. Through this multistakeholder process, we can develop best practices for newsrooms seeking to use AI tools ethically and without unintended consequences.
