Top Online Engineering School Responds to Industry Appetite for Data Science, Energy, and Cloud Expertise
NYU School of Engineering’s 3-Course Immersion Offerings Bridge Technology Skills Gap
Fortune 500 companies looking to move the talent needle forward are now able to send employees through online certificate courses in data science, power engineering, and data center and cloud technologies. The NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering's online learning unit has launched certificates of completion in these new three-course immersion programs.
The new Data Science certificate includes three courses in big data analysis, machine learning, and principles of database systems, with substitutions allowed for visualization or cloud computing courses. “Organizations are drowning in data but starving for insights,” said Professor Nasir Memon, chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. “The Data Science certificate provides coursework immediately applicable to data scientists working on complex data problems.”
Demand for big data expertise is rapidly expanding, with a McKinsey Global Institute report estimating that by 2018, “the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.
In the fast-growing data center industry, skills derived from NYU School of Engineering’s three-course Data Center and Cloud Technologies series allows technical personnel to apply their know-how to data center networking and resource management, Internet protocols, and cloud computing.
The online Power Technologies certificate gives company staff core competencies to support electric power systems, electronic power supplies, and electric drives in the energy sector.
According to a study by the Center for Energy Workforce Development, nearly half of all technicians and engineers in the energy utilities will need to be replaced within the decade.
“As sophisticated technologies support the nation's energy sources and data center infrastructure, we recognized the need to provide industry with advanced digital education to meet the demand," said Shivendra Panwar, who heads the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. “These targeted courses, delivering up-to-the-minute intelligence, emerge from our faculty's deep industry experience."
Each certificate can be completed in one year in a trimester schedule. Students who enter the corporate series earn nine credits that may be applied to a qualifying master’s degree.
The new immersion certificates follow an earlier announcement of an online computer science certificate, called Emerging Computing Technologies, which offers technical personnel expertise in cloud computing, mobile security, and data analytics.
The NYU School of Engineering ranks eighth in the country in online graduate engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report. Online master’s degree programs include Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Bioinformatics, and Organizational Behavior.
