Freshman Darrius Shaw came all the way from Dallas, Texas to earn his Mechanical Engineering degree at the School of Engineering. He wanted to experience everything New York City had to offer—from the diverse population to the sights and sounds.
Darrius starts his day like most the School of Engineering students, waking up early for class in his dorm room on campus. He likes his morning walk to Rogers Hall—it’s a chance to talk with friends and take in the beauty of the MetroTech Center before it’s bustling with students. After classes, Darrius heads back to his residence building to relax before his busy afternoon, which is filled with robotics lab, engineering club meetings and duties at his work-study job in admissions.
When Darrius isn’t in class or at work, he’s taking the subway into Manhattan or walking around Brooklyn with his friends. You can also find him in the parks around campus or in the Jacobs Hall gym playing basketball.

Hometown: Dallas, TX
Major: Mechanical Engineering
9:00am My day starts with a few lecture classes in the morning.
10:00am Many of my friends and I are in the same classes, so we always walk to each building together.
12:00pm In the afternoon, I make my way back to my residence hall to relax and talk with friends.
1:30am I like to stay active, so I make time to play basketball in the gym at the Jacob’s Academic Building.
3:00pm I love my courses and I try to participate in class as much as possible.
