Ashwin Gopi - Graduate Student Profile
A mechanical engineer focused on people, Gopi is earning his master's at the School of Engineering, contributing to a global effort for social innovation. His crowdsourcing input on comfortable workspaces won a grant to create the Greenhouse, a student-run lounge dedicated to ideation and collaboration.
A desire to build interpersonal connections rather than machines led Ashwin Gopi to the School of Engineering. Pursuing a Master of Science in Management, he serves as Community Manager for The Global Idea Exchange at NYU and mentor for the School of Engineering course “Design Thinking for Creative Problem Solving.” Ashwin co-founded and was elected President of the first student chapter of OpenIDEO, an online social innovation platform with over 37,000 members worldwide.
With support from sponsors like Amnesty International and the European Union, Ashwin and OpenIDEO brainstormed creative ways to help people around the world. Their collaboration on workspace productivity was the catalyst for the Greenhouse, a space on campus where the School of Engineering community connects with other departments, NYU students and representatives from Poly incubators to develop new innovations and seek funding for startups.
