Andy DiPaolo

Executive Director Emeritus, Stanford Center for Professional Development and former Senior Associate Dean, Stanford School of Engineering

Andy DiPaolo founded and directed for nearly 25 years one of the largest university corporate education organizations and distance education networks in the United States delivering graduate, professional and executive programs to engineering professionals at over 3000 companies in 60 countries.  In addition to directing the SCPD, Dr. DiPaolo played leadership roles in Stanford initiatives related to designing and delivering online credit and professional education and IT innovation.

Examples include leading the team to develop Stanford Online, the first system to use video technology to deliver academic courses on the internet, and leading the effort to create the world’s first online graduate engineering degree. In addition, he led the “Stanford Engineering Everywhere” initiative designed to provide open online and e-learning courses to educators and learners worldwide. He has a long history as an advisor to universities, corporations and government agencies on the strategic use of technology to address education and training needs and in the development of new models for distributed learning.

He has delivered over 100 conference keynote presentations and provided consultation and advice to groups as diverse as the University of Michigan, Cisco, Danish Virtual University, U.S. Army, UCLA, International Air Transport Association, Council for Higher Education-Israel, Northwestern University, Hewlett-Packard, Deutsche Telekom and the Agency for International Development.

He has been elected to the U.S. Distance Learning Association Hall of Fame, appointed as a Fellow of the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and is the 2013 recipient of the American Society for Engineering Education’s highest award for an individual in support of delivering education to students in industry. In 2014 he received the Leadership Award from the International Association of Continuing Engineering Education for his pioneering work in online education and e-learning for professional development.
