Meet Debbi Litt
I wanted to transition my career to becoming a user experience designer, and I felt IDM’s interdisciplinary areas of study would allow me to practice and apply design thinking through a variety of mediums and build a portfolio of work.
How would you describe your online learning experience?
Creative Coding was an excellent course online; Kevin Siwoff's online learning modules were easy to follow, and homework and projects were clearly defined. Having the class materials available immediately allowed for self-paced learning. Kevin utilized a Slack channel that made it easy to ask questions and seek help. We also met for an hour via web conferencing that provided opportunity to ask questions in real time and share our work.
What inspired you to pursue a Master's Degree in Integrated Design & Media?
I was seeking a program that would build upon my existing skills and experience in technology. Specifically, I wanted to transition my career to becoming a user experience designer, and I felt IDM’s interdisciplinary areas of study would allow me to practice and apply design thinking through a variety of mediums and build a portfolio of work.
What set the integrated design & media program at NYU apart from others you considered?
IDM’s accelerated curriculum offered me the opportunity to complete my degree on a part-time basis in only two and a half years; other programs I considered were less feasible for those who are employed full time. This was the most important factor in my graduate studies.
Which courses in the program made the biggest impact for you, and why?
I loved Ideation and Prototyping. I&P was the first course I took, and it helped me unlock my creative process. I learned the necessary time management methods I would employ throughout my time at IDM, and its critique-based classes challenged me to do my best work and also helped me connect with my fellow classmates. The coursework was challenging but led to the important lesson that you can always push yourself and your ideas further.
What specific skills or mindset did you develop here which were pivotal to your career?
Design thinking, UX processes, and advanced research methods.
