Team Hunt II

Date: January 30, 2017 (Tuesday)

EIA successfully hosted Team Hunt I in December that attracted 25 pitches and 55 attendees. Team Hunt II, our second installment of the team building event, serves as the infrastructure for competitors and startups to find teams and teammates to enter the competition.

Founders Panel

Founders Panel gathers successful entrepreneurs to share their experiences with students and potential InnoVention participants. The founders representing different venture stages are prompted to interactively discuss the origins of their companies, pitfalls to avoid and qualities to adopt to thrive on the entrepreneurial path. Rahul Kumar, InnoVention 2016 1st place winner, will also share his competition experience and how it shaped the Elements' story.

The first InnoVention workshop introduces the teams to the business model canvas and customer development methodology. The workshop specifically focuses on the quadrants of problem/solution fit, unique value proposition, customer segments and teach teams to rapidly validate the key assumptions behind their ventures.

Pitch Workshop I

Date: February 23, 2017 (Thursday)

In preparation for Quarter-Finals Pitch I, 18 InnoVention teams are coached through the best startup presentation practices with the help of competition mentors and experienced entrepreneurs. This session is targeted towards delivering a focused and concise 4-minute pitch and Q&A.

Quarter-Finals Pitch I

Date: February 28, 2017 (Tuesday)
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Location: Data Future Lab

The first elimination stage where the 18 teams present their startup ideas. Each team has 2 minutes to pitch and 3 minutes to answer questions. The rising entrepreneurs will focus on explaining their market, customer, problem and solution hypotheses. Five experienced entrepreneurs will serve as judges to select 12 teams advance into the InnoVention semi-finals.

Prototyping & Product Development Workshop

Date: March 1, 2017 (Wednesday)
Time: 7:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: Tandon MakerSpace Event Space

Each of the 12 remaining InnoVention teams receive a $500 stipend to spend on prototyping resources. This workshop teaches attendees to synthesize the results of their ongoing customer discovery into testable prototypes. They are exposed to rapid prototyping with available hardware and software tools like Arduino, Sketch, and InVision. Additionally, the workshop leaders discuss the forthcoming product development vision that the entrepreneurs must keep in mind.


Mentor Night

Date: March 7, 2017 (Tuesday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: Stern School of Business

InnoVention Teams meet one-on-one with successful NYC founders, investors and technology leaders with the aim of being paired with one mentor. Mentors offer their time and experience to help teams with validation, prototype development, pitching and other challenges. During the competition, each team is expected to actively communicate with their mentors on a weekly basis.

Team Building Workshop

Date: March 22, 2017 (Wednesday)
Time: 12:00 - 2:00 PM

Location: Leslie eLab

Having worked together for a month, InnoVention founders will be pushed to effectively optimize team dynamics, delegation, productivity, collaboration and sow the seeds for an efficient and happily managed team. The workshop lead by two proven early stage startup teams, which explain their internal processes and discuss topics of company culture, operational agreements, and successful performance.

Pitching Workshop II

Date: March 30, 2017 (Thursday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

In anticipation of Semi-Finals Pitch II, the teams are further coached to improve pitches and effectively demonstrate their prototypes. This session is targeted towards a presentation that explains the product, technical feasibility, development risks and showcases the prototype in a 5-minute pitch and Q&A.

Semi-Finals Pitch II

Date: April 5, 2017 (Wednesday)
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Location: Rise New York

The second elimination stage where the 12 InnoVention teams pitch their ventures to a panel of five new judges. Each team has 4 minutes to present their progress on discovering their market, validating the problem/solution fit, understanding the technical risks prototyping. After a 3-minute Q&A, the judges select 6 teams to advance to Demo Day Pitch III.

Hardware Manufacturing Workshop

Date: April 10, 2017 (Monday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: MakerSpace Event Space

During this workshop, the remaining 6 InnoVention teams are exposed to the perils and challenges of the manufacturing and scaling processes, especially for hardware startups. Anna Thornton, Director of Quality and Engineering at Dragon Innovation and lecturer at Tufts School of Engineering, will discuss how to go from current prototypes to a bill of materials, factory contracts, validation tests and mass production. 


Entrepreneurial Finance Workshop

Date: April 17, 2017 (Monday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: NYU Data Future Lab 

This workshop, led by the Managing Director of NYU’s Future Labs and the AI Nexus Accelerator Steven Kuyan. He introduces the teams to the processes of determining revenue streams, building cost structures, developing pricing strategies, and understanding the importance of margins, customer acquisition costs, and customer lifetime values.


This workshop is sponsored by Prodigy Finance, an innovative platform that offers loans to international postgraduate students attending top universities. Through a community platform, alumni, impact investors, and other private qualified entities invest in tomorrow's leaders whilst earning a financial and social return. Entrepreneurial Law Workshop

Date: April 20, 2017 (Thursday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: Lowenstein & Sandler NYC

Having learned the core concepts behind validating an idea, creating a team, prototyping a product, launching mass production and building financial strategies, the InnoVention teams join the final workshop to learn the intricacies of entrepreneurial law. The lead speaker with a strong legal background explains legal entity structures, founder agreements, as well as patent eligibility, types, and applications.


Storytelling & Branding Workshop

Date: April 24, 2017 (Monday)
Time: 6:30 - 9:00 PM

Location: L101, NYU Stern School of Business

The 6 InnoVention finalists attend the last presentation-focused workshop to prepare for delivering the winning pitch. Eric Martinez, partner at a top design driven branding consultancy VSA Partners, will be the lead speaker. Eric will discuss effective storytelling and pitching techniques and coach each team to sum up their competition progress and compellingly present details on the venture’s problem, solution, revenue model, market, competitive advantage and execution timeline in an 8-minute pitch.


Demo Day Pitch III

Date: May 4, 2017 (Thursday)
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 PM


Location: Galvanize

The final 6 InnoVention teams set-up demo booths to highlight their ventures to the attending public and go off to pitch for the grand prizes. The final pitches are judged by a group of 5 investors and venture capitalists. Each team has 8 minutes to present and 4 minutes to answer judge questions. The winners are chosen based on venture feasibility, competition progress, prototype development, and company vision. The event concludes with 3 winners being crowned the champions of InnoVention 2017.
