Lady Jays Outlast Hunter

Women's Volleyball Notches Big Win; Now 4-7

Brooklyn, NY - It's good to be home.  That was the feeling the NYU-Poly Women's Volleyball team had after a hard fought, five set match against non-conference rival Hunter College Thursday night in the Jacobs Gymnasium. In the end the Lady Jays twice rallied from a set down to overcome the Lady Hawks, winning 3-2.

Senior Meredith Shipman (Sugarland, TX) and junior Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, TX) combined for 42 kills to pace NYU-Poly to their fourth win of the season. Last year, Hunter and NYU-Poly split their regular season meetings, each beating the other 3-1.  But, this year it would take all five sets until the Lady Jays picked up the 15-11 tiebreaker victory.

The Lady Jays got off to a slow start and eventually watched a first set lead turn into a 25-27 loss. But, NYU-Poly bounced back in the second with a solid 25-19 win. Hunter would win the third set 25-17 to go up 2-1.  Facing their first home court loss in over a year, the Lady Jays turned on the heat in the fourth set as Shipman tallied 6 of her 22 kills. The Lasy Jays also hit a match-high .281 in route to a 25-21 win.

In the final set, Shipman led with four kills and Kalvert added three of her 20 to seal the win for NYU-Poly. For the game sophomore setters Corey Loupee (Crown Point, IN) and Nicole Breitbart (Ridgewood, NJ) picked up 20 and 21 assists respectively, while Shipman led the way with 25 digs and three service aces. Junior Melissa Pona (Staten Island NY) added 20 digs.

NYU-Poly (4-7, Skyline 1-0) hosts City Tech and Ramapo this Saturday in a tri-match which kicks off at 11:00am in the Jacobs Gymnasium.
