Softball Goes 1-2 on Final Day of Florida Trip

Sunday blasts two homers on the day

Fort Myers, FL -  The NYU-Poly softball team finished its trip to Florida with an overall 4-6 record after going 1-2 on Tuesday.  The Lady Jays won their third straight in the morning contest against Curry College, winning 5-1.  But the fortunes were so lucky in the afternoon contests, as a combination of errors and silent bats led to two losses. NYU-Poly lost to Amherst 8-2 and then fell to Fredonia State, in a battle of NY teams, 11-4.

In the win against Curry, senior Laura Buzzard (Warrington, PA) hurled a 3-hit gem, earning her third win of the season. At the plate, junior Tara Bucci (Montgomery, NJ) went 3-for-3 in the contest, while sophomore Katie Jo Sunday (West Lawn, PA) matched that performance, going 3-for-3. But Sunday had the big hit, as she smacked a 3-run HR to give the Lady Jays a comfortable lead, and eventual win.

Against Amherst the Lady Jays found themselves in a tight game, but the flood gate of errors led to 7 unearned runs for the Lord Jeffs. Seven NYU-Poly fielding mistakes broke open a tight game, as Amherst went on to the 8-2 win. Natalia Stockinger (Putnam Valley, NY) led NYU-Poly as she belted a 2-run homer for the Lady Jays.

Again, errors plagued NYU-Poly in their finale against Fredonia State. Tied 2-2, going into the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Jays miscues led to five Blue Devil runs. Fredonia tacked on four more in the seventh to cruise to the 11-4 score.  Sunday hit her second homer of the day, a solo shot, while freshmen Corrine Fitzgibbons (Brooklyn, NY) hit her second homer of the season for the Lady Jays.

NYU-Poly (4-6 overall), returns to Brooklyn for its home opener this Saturday against Baruch College. The contest is a double-header beginning at 12:00 pm.
