Perched for Playoffs; Lady Jays Defeat Old Westbury

Need Panthers help to make first-ever Skyline appearance

Brooklyn, NY -  The NYU-Poly women's basketball team is one win away from its first-ever Skyline Conference post-season playoff appearance. But, unfortunately for the Lady Jays they have no control over obtaining that win, as they must await the outcome of the Old Westbury vs. Sage Colleges game on Saturday.

Thanks to a convincing 79-55 win over the Lady Panthers Wednesday night, NYU-Poly (11-13, Skyline 7-11) now needs Old Westbury to defeat Sage Colleges Saturday. If that happens, there will be a three way tie for the 6th and final playoff spot. The criteria for determining who advances could go all the way to each team's regional ranking.

As for the game, NYU-Poly was led by sophomore Margaux PIckell (Howell, NJ) who had a career night as she racked up 28 points and a fierce 22 rebounds.  Sophomore Kristen Leitheuser (Millbrook, NY) added 14 points and nine boards and senior Damei Mahama (Kearney, NJ) chipped in with 11 points. Pickell and sophomore Megan Bosi (New Milford, NJ) each led the team with four assists.

NYU-Poly, which led 45-24 at halftime, did not make a three-point shot on the night, but converted on 31 shot attempts and was 17-for-26 from the foul line. Old Westbury (6-11, Skyline 11-13) was led Krystina Agard who recorded 24 points and nine rebounds. No other Lady Panthers were able to get into double figures thanks to the NYU-Poly defensive effort.

NYU-Poly will play its last regular season contest Friday night against Medgar Evers College at 7:00pm. It will be Senior Night as the Lady Jays will honor seniors Mahama and Consuelo Aranda (Calexico, Mexico). Both will have to wait and see if it is their last game for the Lady Jays.
