Jays and Privateers battle to second straight tie

Manhattan, NY - It was a matchup of two teams trying to climb out of the middle of the pack in the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer standings. And, even after 110 minutes of soccer, neither side gained any ground, as Maritime and NYU-Poly ended in a scoreless draw at Pier 40 Saturday night.

Rob Petri (St. Louis, MO / St Johns Vianney) turned away eight shots, while Harris Papson stopped four for the Privateers in what was a defensive battle on a cold and windy evening on the Hudson River pier. NYU-Poly reamins slightly ahead of Maritime, in 5th place, at 1-2-1, while Maritime holds on to the 6th spot at 1-3-1.

It was a tail of two halves, literally, as NYU-Poly was the more dangerous team in the first 55 minutes, while the second 55. including the two overtime periods, clearly went to Maritime.  In the first half, NYU-Poly had four shots on goal, including a left-footed strike from sophomore midfielder Adam Lakawicz (Butler, NJ / Butler HS). His shot richocheted off the near post and out of play.  Moments later, freshmen Nick Belesis (Marblehead, MA / Marblehead HS) and senior Volkan Turgut (Rochester, NY / Bishop Kearny HS) each had opportunities with Papson, but the Privateer keeper came up both times.

In the first overtime period, Maritime nearly won the game as a rebound shot inside the six hit the back post and then rolled right to another Maritime forward, but was tackled away by Tomi Fischer (Stratford, CT / Bunnell HS).

Maritime outshot the Jays 8-5 and led in corner kicks 4-3. NYU-Poly hosts St. Joseph's on Wednesday at 7:00pm at home at Aviator.
