Medgar Evers no match for Jays; NYU-Poly wins 8-1

Brooklyn, NY -  It was a thrilling end to a dominating performance Sunday afternoon, as the second doubles teams of Domonique Tota and Tiffnay Griffis won their match in an unbelievable ending, giving the Fighting Blue Jays an 8-1 victory over non-conference foe Medgar Evers College.

Tied 7-7, Tota hit a screaming cross-court, backhand to seal the victory and end a stellar day for the Lady Blue Jays tennis team. For Tota (Clearwater, FL), it was her first-ever tennis match for NYU-Poly, and for Griffis (Madison, AL), just her second.

In singles play, Ariel Zieg (Rockland County, NY) won 6-1 and 6-0, while teammate Stephanie Weldon (Westchester, NY) improved to 2-0 on the season, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Seidah Lake (Antigua) won in 3rd singles 6-1, 6-0. Other winners for NYU-Poly included Rebecca Sandora (Wildwood, NJ) by a 6-0, 6-1 score and Xenia Santiago cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Medgar Evers only match win came in 1st doubles. The Cougars (0-1) were short on players and had to forfeit at 3rd doubles and 6th singles. NYU-Poly (1-1, Skyline 0-1) will hit the courts again on Friday when they face off against Lehman College at 3:30pm in the Bronx.
