An Opportunity to Soar: Poly Trustees approve NYU merger

On Thursday, March 6, Poly’s Board of Trustees voted to approve the Definitive Agreement to merge with New York University with the long-range goal of Poly becoming a school of engineering and technology of NYU.

“With more than a supermajority, the Board approved the agreement and we couldn’t be more pleased,” said Chairman Craig Matthews who announced the decision at a university Town Hall. “This momentous affiliation will make New York a leading technological center for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic growth.” (story continues below)

University President Jerry M. Hultin described the merger as “a perfect fit between two great universities” and as “an opportunity for Poly to soar.” He stressed that the transformation would require effort, saying that “business as usual won’t make us the best Poly we can be.”

Strengthening the school’s curriculum and increasing cross-disciplinary research and degrees are among the many planned efforts to elevate the school to a top-tier technology and engineering institution where students learn how to compete in the 21st-century global economy. (story continues below)

Last week, NYU's Board voted to allow President John Sexton and the Board’s Chair, Martin Lipton, to sign the merger agreement once it was finalized.

The next step is review by New York State regulatory agencies which is anticipated to happen in May or June.
