The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the School of Engineering invites applications from ambitious, dynamic, and energetic individuals for up to three tenure-track assistant professor positions in the smart systems and/or smart materials area. Applicants with exceptional qualifications, including a significant track-record beyond their doctoral and post-doctoral training, will be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. In recent years, the department faculty has engaged in funded projects spanning fundamental research, engineering applications, and educational activities in the area of smart systems and materials, particularly in the fields of mechatronics, robotics, multifunctional materials, multiphysics modeling, sensors/actuators, and signal processing and control. Moreover, the department’s recent strategic plan has reiterated faculty’s intent and commitment to further develop its strength in the smart systems and materials area while being responsive to the institutional research thrusts in Urban Systems and Bioengineering. Successful candidates will have opportunities to develop their independent research and will be expected to collaborate with colleagues within the department, at NYU School of Engineering, and at other schools of NYU. Ability to build a significant externally funded research program through independent, collaborative, and multidisciplinary activities is essential as is the commitment to undergraduate and graduate instruction, laboratory development, and student mentoring. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. The position begins on September 1, 2014, and includes competitive salary, benefits, and research start-up funds.
