Hardware struggles in a software city


When platoon leader Jeremy McCool was stationed in Iraq in 2007 and 2008, he and his men had to travel through the scarred country to gas up their vehicles. Gas flowed cheaply in oil-rich Iraq, but the other costs of obtaining fuel, in terms of lives and danger, were high.

He promised himself that once he left the Army, he would do what he could to reduce reliance on such fuels for transportation.

Five years later, his determination has found its form in HEVO Power, a two-year-old startup with a novel, wireless charging technology for electric vehicles.

Ensconced at NYU Poly's ACRE incubator for clean-tech companies, HEVO took one of the top three honors in the U.S. Energy Department's Advanced Research Projects competition in February.
