Restructuring of Power Grid and Its Impact on Energy Market

Lecture / Panel

For NYU Community

Speaker: Dr. Sindhu Suresh

Faculty Host: Dariusz Czarkowski

Abstract

One of the most common technological terms of the 21st century is "smart grid." Electric power transmission and distribution system must be restructured in an effective manner to support the economic growth, national security and green energy policies. Smart Grid technologies make the transmission and distribution grid more reliable, resilient, and secure to accommodate the intermittent weather related energy resources and demand side energy management.

This talk will address multiple facets of Smart Grid Topology, such as:

  • Market topologies
  • Impact of intermittent generation
  • National-level policies for renewables and emissions
  • Grandfather grid system
  • Ancillary market services to maintain the reliability of the grid system
  • Energy storage as an option to support the intermittency
  • Demand side energy management
  • Power engineering, power electronics, and control systems along with communication and networking to make the smart grid paradigm a reality
