Students with Disabilities

About the Law

Two federal laws prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The first is section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which provides that students with a disability are protected from discrimination, and that they are entitled to an equal educational opportunity. The second is Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits a denial of participation in, or benefits from, the services of a public entity. Case law has determined that these rules mean that colleges and universities, while they cannot be required to make substantial or fundamental modifications to facilitate disabilities, are expected to make reasonable accommodations.

The School of Engineering's Commitment

The School of Engineering is committed to providing equal educational opportunity and participation for students with disabilities, and to foster independent decision making skills necessary for personal and academic success.

The Office of Student Affairs serves as a satellite of NYU’s Moses Center for Students with Disabilities. Utilizing the Moses Center’s procedures the Office of Student Affairs determines qualified disability status and assists students in obtaining appropriate services and accommodations.

Note, however accommodations for students with disabilities do not include the waving of academic course requirements, nor the changing of courses subject matter.

Responsibility as a Student with a Disability

Any student who needs a reasonable accommodation based on a qualified disability is required to register with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs for assistance.

Confidentiality

Information about your disability is not shared with members of the School of Engineering community. The information provided to faculty is only a list of accommodations.

Temporary Disability

If you are the unfortunate victim of an accident, illness or crime, and are rendered temporarily disabled, contact the Office of Student Affairs.
