Course Description: The primary goal of this course is to provide the students with the methods and tools to understand fundamentals of transportation and traffic operations. An effort will be made to introduce the differences between regular and emergency operations from the perspective of transportation systems. The theoretical aspects of the course will be supplemented by the use of real and simulated data sets and examples from the real-world problems. Each lecture consists of 1-2 hours teaching on basic concepts followed by an introduction of real world data and computational approaches to apply reviewed techniques to the data. R programming language will be introduced as the basic computational tool to deal with these data sets. Students will also be given a comprehensive list of reading material that they will use to develop their final project for the class.
